[Fiction refined] [Magic retained]

Editorial support for genre fiction.

You know your story completely. The world, the characters, the history behind every decision. It all exists clearly in your mind.

Writing is the work of transferring that clarity onto the page.

Sometimes things get lost in that transfer. A motivation feels obvious to you but never quite appears on the page. A structural thread weakens without you noticing. A sentence does not say what you meant it to say. Familiarity can make small gaps invisible.

Editing bridges that gap.

Editing bridges that gap.

At Alchemy Editorial, the work happens between those two perspectives. Story craft, genre expectations, and the mechanics of writing are considered alongside the reader’s experience, so that the story on the page reflects the story you meant to tell.

Developmental editing, line editing, copyediting, and proofreading each address a different stage of that process. From strengthening structure and character arcs to refining prose and correcting mechanics, the aim is consistent: helping the reader experience the story as it was meant to be experienced.

The story is yours. The work here is to help it arrive intact.

“Her attention to detail in the line edits has been so insightful … it was as if Kayla was reading the book I had in my brain and made suggestions to help me bring the vision in my head to life.”

— S. Snyder, fantasy author.

Services

I offer all stages of editing, from big-picture storytelling to line-level craft. I help authors refine structure, sharpen voice, and polish language.

Developmental Editing

The big-picture elements of your story: overall structure, plot, characters, pacing, and narrative flow.

Line Editing

The prose and language of your manuscript at the sentence level, considering word choice, syntax, and overall writing style.

Copyediting

The mechanics of grammar, punctuation, spelling, usage and style in your manuscript.

Proofreading

The final polish before publication.

Each project is tailored to your manuscript’s needs, publishing goals, and genre.

I’m Kayla, a professionally trained fiction editor working primarily in fantasy, horror, and gothic fiction. I hold a Professional Editing Standards Certificate from Queen’s University and have completed advanced coursework in developmental and line editing.

My work is grounded in formal editorial standards, genre fluency, and ongoing study of craft and publishing practice. I pay close attention to structure, character motivation, pacing, and prose at the sentence level, offering feedback that is clear, practical, and aligned with how fiction is evaluated in today’s market.

A bit about me…
your future editor, perhaps?

“As for her editorial letter, any expectations I had were blown out of the water. Her letter possessed such an articulate and thoughtful response to my manuscript. She provided in-depth suggestions and advice on how to improve what was already there. Despite it being a critique, which by nature can of course feel a tad negative, I never felt bombarded with negativity for a moment.”
